Hallgrimskirkja’s Motet choir Advent concert at 4pm – Messiah by Handel

For Advent 2019, the Hallgrímskirkja Motet Choir, the Hallgrímskirkja International Baroque Orchestra and a stunning ensemble of soloists will be performing Handel’s glorious oratorio Messiah, conducted by Hörður Áskelsson. Handel’s Messiah is considered to be one of his most important compositions and indeed one of history’s greatest. A live performance of Messiah is always a festive event which no music lover can afford to miss.
The Hallgrímskirkja Motet Choir, founded in 1982, has long been one of the leading choirs in Iceland. Its large and diverse repertoire includes many oratorios, passions and requiems, as well as a cappella sacred music from various periods. The choir has also premièred many Icelandic compositions and received prizes in international choir competitions.
Members of the Hallgrímskirkja International Baroque Orchestra are all internationally renowned early music professionals and have been consistently praised for their performances in Iceland.

These will be the soloists:

Herdís Anna Jónasdóttir, Icelandic soprano. Earlier this year, Mrs Jónasdóttir was given the Icelandic Theatre Award in the category Singer of the Year for her role in Verdi’s La traviata with the Icelandic Opera.
David Erler, German countertenor. Mr Erler is one of the foremost baroque countertenors in Europe.
Martin Vanberg, Swedish tenor. Mr Vanberg has established himself as one of the leading Scandinavian baroque tenors.
Jóhann Kristinsson, Icelandic baritone. Mr Kristinsson won the Icelandic Music Award in 2018 in the category Most Promising Young Artist. In 2017, he placed third and won the audience prize in the international vocal competition Das Lied in Heidelberg. He recently won first prize in the prestigious Stella Maris vocal competition.
