Last week of Lent and Easter – program in Hallgrimskirkja

HallgrimskirkjaIn the last week of Lent and in Easter there will be may services and concerts. Hallgrímskirkja is an open sanctuary in heart of the city. You are welcome.

Saturday 19. March – church and tower are open from 9 am – 5 pm

Concert at 2 pm: Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Organist: Mattias Wager from Stockholm, Sweden. Storyteller: Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, actress. Admission: 2500 kr. for adult‘s and free for children. Tickets sold at the entrance.

Palm-Sunday 20. March – church and tower are open from 9 am – 5 pm

Sunday service at 11 am: Dr. Sigurður Árni Þórðarson and rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir. Hallgrísmskirkja children´s choir sings. Ása Valgerður Sigurðardóttir conductor. The Motett-choir sings and the organist is Hörður Áskelsson. Sunday-school is led by Inga Harðardóttir. Coffee after service.

Organ-concert at 5 pm: Organ and poetry – Stations of the Cross – Le Chemin de la Croix after Marcel Dupré. Organist Mattias Wager of Storkyrkan-church in Stockholm. Reader Solveig Simha. Admission: 2500 ISK. Tickets sold at entrence.

Holy Thursday 24. march – tower is open from 9 am – 5 pm and church is open to 22.00

Children’s songfestival at 5 pm: Children and youth choirs from different churches sing and perform. Co-ordinator is Margrét Bóasdóttir. Free admission.

8 pm Eucharist, Getsemane-meditation and Lent-concert. Rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir. Schola cantorum sings and conductor is Hörður Áskelsson. Hallgrímskirkja‘s chamber-choir, Schola cantorum, gives a concert with beautiful lent music including the works of Gesualdo, Lotti og Allegri. Schola cantorum now celebrates 20 years anniversary. Free admittance.

Good Friday 25. March – church and tower are open from 9 am – 5 pm

Service at 11 am: Rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir. Litania of Bjarna Þorsteinsson. The Motett-choir sings. Conductor and organist is Hörður Áskelsson.

The Hymns of the Passion by Hallgrímur Pétursson on Good Friday – the reading starts at 1 pm: Readers are singers from the Hallgrimskirkja‘s Motett-choir. Gísli Sigurðsson, Guðrún Hólmgeirsdóttir, Halldór Hauksson, Inga Harðardóttir, Svanhildur Óskarsdóttir, Ævar Kjartansson, Guðrún Finnbjarnardóttir, Elva Dögg Melsted, Snorri Sigurðsson og Gunnar Thor Örnólfsson. Coordinators are: Svanhildur Óskarsdóttir og Ævar Kjartansson. Hörður Áskelsson and Björn Steinar Sólbergsson play the Klais-organ between readings.

Resurrection day – Easter Sunday 27. March – church and tower are open from 8 am – 5 pm 

Mass at 8 am: Rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir and dr. Sigurður Árni Þórðarson. The Hallgrimskirkja‘s Motett choir performs Ester-music. Conductor and organist is Hörður Áskelsson.

Mass at 11 am: Dr. Sigurður Árni Þórðarson and rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir. Easter music. The Motett choir performs and conductor is Hörður Áskelsson. Organist is Björn Steinar Sólbergsson.

English Mass at 2 pm: Rev. Bjarni Þór Bjarnason. Organist is Björn Steinar Sólbergsson.

Second day of Easter 28. March – church and tower are open from 9 am – 5 pm

Mass and confirmation at 11 am: Dr. Sigurður Árni Þórðarson and rev. Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir and Inga Harðardóttir, youth-director. The Motett-choir sings. Conductor and organist is Hörður Áskelsson.

All are welcome to church and to the Lord’s table in Hallgrimskirkja.
